ski boat has burst into flames on Somerset Dam, northwest of Brisbane, leaving five people in hospital.

The three adults and two children were taken to the Kilcoy Hospital following the explosion about 8am (AEST) on Saturday.

Three of them are expected to be transferred to Brisbane hospitals for treatment.

A two-year-old, nine-year-old and 30-year-old suffered significant burns, a police statement said.

The dam is a popular venue for skiers and campers.

The boat has been towed ashore and will be examined by Sunshine Coast Water Police.

FOUR patients were taken to the Royal Brisbane and Royal Children's Hospitals after being transported by two rescue helicopters after a serious boating accident at Somerset Dam Saturday morning.

A 30 year-old man is in a serious condition and was transported in one chopper to Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital after suffering burns to 36 per cent of his legs and face.

A two year-old child has second degree burns to 18 per cent of his arms, face and legs and a nine year-old has facial burns and burns to 18 per cent of one leg.

Both children suffered inhalation and will be treated at Royal Children's Hospital.

Also on board the children's helicopter was a 28 year-old man who suffered facial burns and second-to- third degree burns on 18 per cent of his arms.

A fifth patient was taken to Caboolture Hospital by ambulance with minor burns.

The family, who were staying at Lake Somerset Holiday Park, were in a ski boat at 8.30am when it caught fire.

They made it to shore and a relative drove them to the Kilcoy Hospital where they were evacuated by helicopter to Brisbane.
