Seqwater is urging people not to risk their lives by swimming in dams or weirs that have been inundated by heavy rain in the past few days.

Several dams in the Sunshine and Cooloola Coast region have reached capacity.

Lake MacDonald, Ewan Maddock, Cedar Pocket and Wappa Dams are flowing over the spillways.

Water grid CEO Barry Dennien says it is extremely dangerous to enter flooded dams or weirs.

"We always say that when there's rain around like this, it's a good time to be very careful and stay away from flowing water," he said.

"You just never know what's in the water.

"There could be debris. There could be submerged objects. It's just not a good safe place to be when water is flowing.

"Flowing water is dangerous."
