SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING - SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND

for FLASH FLOODING

For people in the

SUNSHINE COAST and parts of the

GYMPIE Council Areas.

Issued at 9:32 pm Friday, 24 February 2012.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 9:25 pm, very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Maroochydore and Noosa Heads. These thunderstorms are slow moving. Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect Caloundra, Eumundi and Nambour by 9:55 pm.

Very heavy rainfall and flash flooding are likely.

90mm of rainfall has been recorded at Noosa Heads in the 1 hour to 9:30pm.

85mm of rainfall has been recorded at Tewantin in the 1 hour to 9:30pm.

A separate Severe Weather Warning is current for the Southeast Coast and parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:

* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.

* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.

* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.

* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.

* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 10:30 pm.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 219. The Bureau and Emergency Management Queensland would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Apart from cyclones nearing the coast BOM doesn`t advise the use of the standard emergency warning signal too often.

I watched that severe storm build up off the coast from Tewantin,on the radar late yesterday/last night and it just enveloped the coast from north of Noosa to Caloundra,it certainly had a lot of severe wind and rain.

It was an added extra to the rain that came with the low yesterday.
