Locality: Mooloolah Bar

Activity: hydrographic survey and navigation warning

Refer to notice: 212 (T) of 2014

Mariners are advised that a hydrographic survey of the Mooloolah River and its coastal bar on Wednesday 16 April 2014, shows a least depth of 2.2 metres at LAT on the channel's centre-line, as well as a least depth of 2.1 metres at LAT for the eastern extremity of the channel adjacent the end of the eastern breakwater.

Hard copies of the survey plan are available from the Sunshine Coast office of Maritime Safety Queenland at Mooloolaba.

A map is also attached to this notice at:

Masters of smaller recreational boats, personal watercraft, and passive craft like kayaks and canoes must remain mindful of the heightened risk to larger vessels navigating the river entrance and coastal bar. Except for entering and departing the river, these smaller vessels and passive craft should keep well clear of the coastal bar and not use it for recreational purposes.

Mariners must also remain mindful that coastal bars are dynamic in nature with conditions constantly changing. Mariners must plan their crossing of the Mooloolah Bar, having careful consideration to prevailing conditions, the state of the tide, and the draught of their vessels. The coastal bar must be navigated with extreme caution.

Mariners are reminded that the Mooloolah River entrance is defined as a coastal bar.

This means that each person on board an open boat less than 4.8 metres in length must now wear an appropriate life jacket or PFD while the boat is crossing the coastal bar.

Binder, is it just a notice as to the current depth, as 2m @ LAT does seem too bad for there? Not sure of the depth needs for those fishing trawlers and yachts though

I thought that bar accumulates sand over time and needs dredging periodically - case in point the state of the bar a cpl years ago where waves were virtually consistently breaking across the entrance to the river and one of the coastguard boats had a mishap...

Looking at other SCD articles, I see this one. I wonder if there was any progress with a more permanent solution?
