ANGLERS in Queensland are being invited to have their say on whether permits should be extended to help maintain fish stocks in more of the state's dams and lakes.

Fisheries Minister John McVeigh said the Newman LNP Government understood the importance of freshwater fishing, not just to anglers but also to regional economies.

“We want to continue to provide Queenslanders and visitors with world-class freshwater fishing well into the future,†Mr McVeigh said.

“The Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme is a highly successful scheme which helps to ensure the ongoing sustainability of fish in dams and lakes.

“Anglers who fish in certain Queensland dams must purchase a permit prior to fishing.

“The money raised by the scheme is used to purchase native fish fingerlings for re-stocking, providing sustainable freshwater fishing options for recreational fishers.â€

The value of permit sales has grown from $530,000 to more than $1 million since the commencement of scheme in 2000. Last year more than 54,000 permits were sold.

Mr McVeigh said there were 32 dams and lakes in the scheme, providing a range of economic, environmental and recreational benefits for surrounding local communities.

“The proposed changes will allow the expansion of this activity across the state and provide vital resources to allow our stock fisheries to grow and prosper,†he said.

“The options have been developed in consultation with key stakeholders and we are now seeking wider community consideration.
