Yeppoon Trip 25/06-03/07

Hi all,

Thought I'd just chuck up a quick report about my recent trip to Yeppoon. After a rather uneventful flight up, I was ready to go fishing on Wednesday morning at Double Heads targeting some mackerel. It was very gloomy when I got out there but this didn't seem to stop the little mackerel from biting, as I landed about 5 undersize ones before calling it quits as the bite went quiet and I think it started to rain.

I did give it another crack that arvo but it was very miserable in the rain, so much so I decided not to try with the fishing the next day when it was raining (the weather on Thursday was very terrible, cold, wet, and windy, so I doubt I would've caught anything anyway).

On Friday, I think the weather was a lot better, so I went out for another session at the rocks. Although I landed nothing massive, I think I managed to wind in around 20 mackerel/wolf herring for the day, with some parts of the session having a fish every cast. These were great fun on the Stradic 3000 and a 2-4kg rod, and 9/10 times I could just dangle the fish in the water the hook would come out meaning they released successfully. 

On Saturday and Sunday, I went to Double Heads again both mornings. The weather was never great, with lots of mist and fog preventing a clear sunrise, but the wind was luckily very manageable. I think I tried floating out some live herring as well, which there was an abundance of here, but I didn't manage to catch anything on those. The only fish I caught all weekend were more mackerel, wolf herring, and grinners, which were plenty of fun on the light gear but did get a bit tiring after a while. 

On Monday I tried the Causeway Lake for a run through tide, but despite many casts of my plastic I could not pick up anything. I was hoping for a flatty, so I was a bit disappointed I could not even manage that. 

Before I knew it, it was Tuesday - my last day of the trip. I decided to go for another flick at Double Heads, hoping for that one big fish to make the trip. Unfortunately, I only managed to catch a few more mackerel and wolf herring, which although fun once again weren't too exciting. When I arrived the weather was excellent but after fishing for a couple of hours it picked up majorly so I called it quits at about 3pm. 

The next day I just packed up my gear and flew home. Overall, it was a fun trip and I enjoyed myself. It was nice to have a change of scenery and catch a few mackerel, which I normally don't see too many of in Brissy. Thanks for reading,

I'd be happy with catching plenty of macks. Looks like they were legal ??

Cheers Brian. That one could have just made it I think but the majority were definitely undersized, that one might've been the biggest of the trip.

Nice report, Hamish. You are getting closer to nailing Yeppoon. The teeth on those wolf herring are insane. I remember a couple of them attacking the windscreen of my father-in-law’s boat in Hervey Bay many years ago. Gave us a bit of a fright. Apparently they are attracted to the glint of the sun on the screen.

Thanks Steve. Fingers crossed next time there’s some bigger fish cruising around. That would’ve been a big surprise having one jump out like that.
