Hastings Point/Pottsville

Had 3 night (Wed to Sat) in the second week of the school holidays at Cabarita Beach (opposite Norrie’s Headland). Forecast was for showers each day and it was mostly accurate with squally showers coming through occasionally but we did get some dry weather in. We stopped off at Fingal on the way and had a walk on the beach and saw a decent bream landed by a fella - promising sign .

Checked out the beach south of Norrie’s on the Wed arvo after checking in to look for gutters and see if we could find pippies but not real successful.

Thursday, after a sleep in, we decided to go look for shells at Hastings Point (didn’t find many as very silted/sanded up) before driving to a car park and walking south along the beach to see if the two melon hole gutters were still there from last holidays. Two decent gutters were there again but more conventional style this time. 
 

We managed to get enough pippies and started fishing the last of the outgoing tide (the gutter was a bit brown at this stage due to the overnight rain) with me getting a bream, my wife a nice whiting and Liam a flathead. We realised there was a suburban street with an entrance track just south of the southern of the two gutters so I walked back to the car, drove and picked them all up.

 

Rinse and repeat the next day, this time with two nice whiting and two bream caught, along with some just under (27cm in NSW) whiting and bream. During our session some heavy squally shower's saw us running for the trees in the dunes a couple of times … brrrrrrrr . We were glad our car was only 100m from our fishing spot this time .

 

The weather was nice on Saturday when we checked out so we went back for one more session, amazed that on a Saturday morning, 100m from a suburban street no one else was fishing at a decent gutter. We got a couple more nice whiting (Liam with the biggest for the trip at 32.5cm) before heading back home. Nice to be back on the beach with an Alvey in the hands - just need to teach my boys now.

Nice family time away. Shame about the moistness in the air.

When my boys were younger, we would go a bit further to Lennox Head. Fishing was good along Boulder Beach. It's close to Ballina for River/Rock wall fishing. It has a freshwater recreational lake (with things for hire like kayaks and skiffs). Lake Ainsworth, if memory is correct. We would stay at a place called 'Quarterdeck' that sat at the top of a grassy knoll overlooking the ocean.
