Pin Session Before the Storms

@Old Scaley and I hit Jumpinpin today to avoid a potentially wrong forecast in the Bay and also to catch a good feed of whiting.

When Steve rang up to order the worms the other day, they advised that there were none left due to @Bretto77 buying the last of them on Sunday. Mr Bait has started selling frozen worms and both of us had some to bring along as well as some squid.

We started off at Kalinga Bank where I got a legal one first up, going around 27. Then Steve got a few but they were a bit small, before landing a 30.5cm version. We thought we would be on after that but a couple of bream later we moved spots. And then again. Things had gone pretty quiet and we only had 4 whiting and a bream in the esky.

We fired up the engine and headed to Gold Bank that offered up nothing, so we headed to
@benno573's secret whiting and flattie spot. It was a bit quiet here and the run was slowing. Something grabbed my line and took off. Stingray ? I wasn't sure but it was going for some strong runs on the light setup. Maybe a big flattie ? The struggle went on and eventually got it close but it was staying down. Then we saw colour and up popped a snapper !! We both couldn't believe it and had a good laugh at the surprise.

Steve slipped the net under it and we put it on the measure - 57cm. My second best for the year and the last thing on my mind. My day couldn't get any better.

It didn't, with no more fish landed for the next two and a half hours, except for a rat tailor when we were trolling for a flattie or two. At 12.45 we checked the radar again, mindful of the forecast storms. We headed for home, with me having a better dinner than Steve, but it was sure better than not fishing.

I’m still laughing when I think of that snapper popping up on the whiting gear. Amazing. Made a quiet day a gold medal event. Beautiful conditions as well. Great day out, mate.

Sorry about the worm situation Brian. I ordered mine on Saturday morning and true to their word without prior payment they kept them for me. So I have to give kudos to the gem for that. 

Snaps are interesting on whiting gear and in some places not uncommon bi-catch. Well done. Glad you both had a good day out

I'd be heading out Friday, but I made an appointment I can't get out of. Hopefully, Monday or Tuesday next week the weather will play ball.

Forgot to mention - The Size 2 short-shank hook was pinned perfectly in the corner of the mouth.

Great snapper Brian, especially on the whiting gear and glad you two still got a few of the target species.
