Hot Spot

After a few dud sessions at Mud, the weather gave @Old Scaley and I a chance to have a look at the Rous today. I was packed and ready Sunday afternoon, with a plan to target Blackspot Tuskfish. Keen.

With cuttlefish and crab in the esky we set about fishing my mark, Rous 1A. After an hour of nothing whatsoever, we moved to my mark -Rous Tusk, where @Allnighter had scored two on a previous session with me.

AT 9am Steve caught an undersized grassie and sent it back. Pretty quiet, not even a grinner. Then 5 minutes later all Hell broke loose with me landing a 44cm target species. Gee these things fight hard. Then Steve hooked up, but it took him to the reef, then it came out, then back in, then back out, then back in, eventually winning the battle.

We were both excited that we were onto the target species. The day was a winner already. Over the next two and a half hours we managed to get another 4 in the esky from 39 to 44. We must have lost close to a dozen to reefings and spat hooks (somebody silly was using a hook size too small on one of his rods, yes, me). One of the losses was when one struck that hard it twisted my Railblazer rod holder 90 degrees so my rod was vertical in the water before peeling line off on a close to locked drag. By the time I got the rod from the holder it was all over.

A wise man or two have told me that you really need to hold the rod in your hand the whole time to give you the best chance at keeping them out of their hidey holes. This was certainly proven today.

What a day it was. Rarely a spare minute where one of us was not getting attention.

I also had the Railblaza slip today with that stinking toady that I told you about.  There I am with about $1k of fishing gear pointing at the bottom of the bay beause I wasnt watching but tidying up the boat.

I would have been less than happy if the holder didnt actually hold.  I think you can put a screw through the bottom - I am going to pull it off an have a look.  Let you know.

It's the workers that just don't understand these stresses.

I'm pretty sure I couldn't get the screw driver to turn any more when I installed them, so it'll be good to hear your discoveries.

Nice one Steve and Brian, exciting session with some tasty rewards . Out of interest, what was the tide doing when they came on the bite? I tried with my boys over near Myora light (just north of Dunwich) for the first time on the holidays but the tide was roaring too hard.

Bought the crabs. Run wasn't as hard as it runs at Myora. We fished the incoming today.

Sure was a great day, Brian. Got to love it when a plan comes together. Conditions were brilliant, fish were cooperative and the company was great.

The bite came on 2-3hrs after high tide for you?  It’s a Dougie Burt theory….I have noticed it a couple of times but not consistently.

ps I ended up moving the minnkota fwd an inch and going to test it out thu morning hopefully find a tuskie weather permitting.

Here’s a tip for you  , ditch the plastic rod holders or at least use a lanyard   , there’ll  be a day when they snap clean off and you’ll loose your rod , reel and fish.

Yep, that was it. It didn't stop for the rest of the tide, but did slow at the change. We got the start of the outgoing and Steve picked up another one.

Good advice, thanks. I might have to tie a lanyard to myself if I get a horse. haha
