  1. What weight main line are you running? 70lb is pretty heavy leader for shore based fishing. What are you targeting? Rod and reel look nice.
  2. You are just going from strength to strength @Kat.
  3. That is probably a# close a# you get to a donut day, Ray. To the rest of us it is not a bad result.
  4. Not mine specifically but I was there. We were fishing for Jew in the Clarence River earlier this year. One of the guy’s girlfriends was into fishing but not that experienced in the salt. She was happy to catch the livies on a bream rod with light nylon and a bait jig. We got busted off a couple of times on 40lb gear. I was on my boat with her boyfriend and she was on my mate’s boat about 19 metres away when her rod buckled over. We assumed that she had hooked a decent bream because there were heaps around. After about 10 minutes we figured it must be something a bit better. About 15 minutes later my mate slipped the net under something and over the side came a very healthy jew. The little jig hook was right in the corner of the mouth. She handled it like a pro and didn’t stop smiling for the rest of the trip. I blacked out her face because I haven’t asked her if it is ok to share online.
  5. Hamish, I agree with the others - stick with the kayak for now. For a start, boat’s are overpriced at the moment. By the time you are old enough to drive a car and a bigger boat, the pandemic should be behind us and prices will have dropped. With the kayak, you can tow that behind your pushie and go out solo. The punt will need to be transported and there will be fewer places to launch it. Those kids on the canals are a disaster waiting to happen. No doubt some of them are living in houses on the canal which means they can jump in the tinny anytime without needing Mum or Dad to transport them to a ramp. And if they are under 16 they won’t have a licence which they are required to have for motors over 6hp. Your turn will come. In the meantime keep looking for those deckie opportunities and learn as much as you can before you get your own tub.
  6. Great fish, Sam. Are you sure you offshore? Or did you buy the fish and drop the boat in the local swimming pool for the photo? Those conditions look AMAZING!
  7. Very productive 2 drifts there @Another Wazza. Many boats fishing the channel?

One thing for sure, Henry Perenara won’t get too many votes for best referee. He has made a lot of questionable decisions from the bunker this year, but that penalty last night that gifted the Roosters a win over the Broncos was probably the worst of the year by any ref, and that is saying something.
  9. After seeing @benno573‘s thread about a lockdown stocktake, I thought I would drag out the many and varied lures that I have bought over the years for specific trips or just picked up in the bargain bin. Some are just cheapies and some were quite expensive. Some have had some use and some have been patiently waiting their turn. Anyway, a lot of them now have surface rust (at least) on the hooks. Most are trebles but I have used singles on a number of them. Pretty sure this won’t be the last lockdown we have so I am thinking that my next lockdown project could be to renovate my lures. The question is do I replace all the rusty hooks, or do I just give the points a touch up with a stone if they are not too bad. Or a combination strategy of replacement on the better lures which I know I will use sometime and a sharpen for the rest? I have previously tried soaking a few cheapies in vinegar and water to dissolve the rust but that didn’t really work too well. What do you champions do? And does anyone have any suggestions for brands that are available in bulk packs that are an acceptable quality at a reasonable price? I don’t want to replace 100 trebles at $2 each. Thanks all.
  10. Love your work @benno573. Last time I went fishing with @ellicat we were pondering over the total purchase price of everything in the various tackle boxes and drawers and cupboards. Most of us would be the same, and the money we have spent over the years would be frightening. Why is it then that we never have everything we need, and have to head to the tackle store to offload another bunch of cash on stuff we might never use? But we love it, don’t we? And it can be our little secret. This post prompted me to dig out some of the scores of lures that I have sitting in boxes and raised a question that I will pose in a new thread.
  11. https://www.greataustralianseafood.com.au/recipes/. Came across this site today. If you are looking for different recipes for your catch, there are some goodies on here.
  12. I had to google where you are. I hope you can get out of lockdown before too long. At least you have a jetty in your backyard so you can do some fishing with the little ones to keep them (and you) occupied until you can get out and about. Good luck and stay safe.
  13. ^^ Taken orally or intravenously?
  14. Really enjoyed that video @Daryl McPhee. Your boys are fast becoming expert fishermen. Interesting to see that you are not fussy about tag ends on the knots. @ellicatand I saw the same thing when we caught up with @Allnighterat Blakesleys the other week.
  15. @AUS-BNE-FISHO, that is a 6” reel, and as @GregOug said, it is a direct wind reel which is fine for most of the species that you would be chasing. Takes a bit of experience to use your hand as the drag, but also very rewarding. This is the info on the Alvey site https://alvey.com.au/shop/surf-60g/.
  16. That is nice healthy looking tailor @Neil Stratford. Congrats
  17. Could have donated that one to the Redcliffe Dolphins. Good fish, Ray.
  18. If you are using herring, I have found that bream nearly always hit the head first so make sure you have a hook in that end of your bait.
  19. Pretty sure that this will be easily beaten, but here it is anyway: Whiting 28cm.
  20. It sure was a beautiful day to be on the water. Shame that we couldn’t get you onto a trophy fish, Hamish, but at least you got a feed. And you get an A+ for your written expression.
  21. Some top chewing there @Neil Stratford
  22. Pretty sure that is @ellicat wearing a blond wig.

I reckon channel 9 had to mute the microphones of a couple of the commentators towards the end of the game. Great performance from the Qld boys. Bring on 2022.
