  1. Nice report Mark. Love the fire photo..
  2. You used to be able to drive out along the southern wall and park your car and fish into or outside the harbour. Not sure you can do that anymore. People have caught good bream and cod there, and the occasional mackerel on the outside of the wall. You can fish Shelly Beach (or pretty much any beach) for whiting if they are around. The rock ledges beside the boat ramp at Gatakers Bay can be fishable at low tide for smallish redefines like parrot and Swéetlip, but fish as light as you can because there are lots of rocky snags. Eli Creek mouth can be good for whiting and flathead on low tide. Same for the mouth of Bielby Creek at Toogum. Lots of options up there. The local paper usually has a fishing report, so maybe grab a copy when you get there. Good luck.
  3. Welcome @Gas079. It will be good to hear some reports from Townsville. I used to go up there for work a bit and used to stay on The Strand. I would usually take a walk along the front there in the morning before work. I can remember seeing mackerel working in very close to the shore on more than one occasion which got the blood pumping.
  4. No fuses at the trailer end. Do the car’s parking lights come on? If so it has to be in the trailer wiring somewhere, most likely in the plug. Could be the plug at the car end but more likely the one you have been working on. If the car parking lights are not working then you should be looking at the fuse box. That would be unlikely since you had one working before and I doubt each side would have its own fuse. Trailer lights sure can be frustrating.
  5. If you are confident that you have the wires in the right holes try putting a thin flathead screwdriver in the split in the pin and separate the two sides slightly. Over time the gap closes a bit and doesn’t give a good connection into the plug at the car end. Hope this makes sense.
  6. Nice work @Simo68. Seems like that window is working for you, so why change a winning formula. I know it is a very popular notion that you have to have lines in the water by sunrise but I am yet to be totally convinced. I can’t tell you how many times I have been out of bed at stupid o’clock to be on the water by dawn and the caught the first fish after 9am. But that might be just me. At least sunrise is a bit later from now and during winter so I will probably give it more of a go this year. Simon, are you targeting the squid for the table or the bait esky? And, did you see any macs being caught at the Rous?
  7. As @AUS-BNE-FISHO said, make sure you bleed them straight away. My 2 favs for tailor are: 1. Cleaned and cooked whole over coals on the campfire same day you caught it or next day. 2. Filleted and then make little alfoil parcels. One fillet per parcel. On each side put a thin layer of tomato, a thin layer of basil and a few drops of Tabasco sauce. Cook 2 minutes per side on BBQ or pan. I think they are underated as a table fish. Hope this helps.
  8. When was the last time you went out Greg? And why?
  9. Does the sounder have a settings menu somewhere? You might be able to change the units to metric.
  10. My last few respools have been with Diawa J - Braid. Seems to be doing the job. My only advice would be to steer clear of the blue colour because it can be hard to see against the water and a blue sky, especially in the lighter line class (6lb).
  11. Always good to be on the water @christophagus. How was the water quality? Much fresh around still?
  12. Lots of good videos on YouTube. I think they are one of the easiest fish to fillet. The fillets are not very big around the minimum legal size. Around 50cm is the sweet spot in my opinion,
  13. Fantastic effort @Kat. That is a quantum leap in your fishing journey. Did you eat it?

    I’ve got your back, Greg.
  15. No mate. Usually avoid the school holidays and weekends these days. Haven’t been for a fish since the Monday before Easter. I dropped the pots in down the port and got 3 monster sandies in the 2 hours I was out so there are some big boys around. Only fished the last 2 hours of the run in and first hour of the run out. Lots of fish on the sounder but turned out to be big and small catfish. Should be good in a week or so. Enjoy Hastings, lovely spot.
  16. Holy crab feast, Kelvin. That is lot of crab to get through. Feel free to drop some over on your way to Hastings.

If games were 15 minutes long, the Broncos might scrape into top 8 contention.
  18. It won’t go through the guides. Did you want the whole 2 metres of leader between your hook and the sinker? If so this is not the set up to use. But if you only need a metre or so for the sinker to run it will be fine although you might have to use more of a lob than a flick, if you get what I mean.
  19. Try tying half an elastic band around the leader to act as a stopper. @tuggershowed me that trick and it works a treat. Easy, cheap and adjustable.
  20. Bad luck Hamish, empty crabs do taste putrid. You will only make that mistake once. The other lesson you have probably figured out is to try to pick up the pots at top or bottom of the tide in areas where the run is strong enough to hide your floats. Keep trying mate, you will get a cooker soon.
  21. Welcome to the site @Mike McLennan. When you sat “at speed”, what speed are you talking about? Did your boat come with a mounting bracket? If so, that is most likely the optimal site to locate the transducer and then it is only depth and angle you need to think about. I have the same setup on a Sea Jay tinny. I like using an adjustable transducer mount for a number of reasons (you can raise it up easily if you are parking on sand for instance) and this gives you the opportunity to easily fine tune the depth while you are on the water. The generally accepted method is to run a straight edge down the hull and set the middle of the transducer to the top of the straight edge and then kick it up one notch. But if you have the adjustable mount you can play with it on the water without having to drill more holes. If I get it right I can do up to 20 knots and still have a reasonable picture of the bottom. I may be wrong, but my theory is that some boats create less turbulence than others so are easier to get a good read at speed. Tinnies gave more strokes (I think) so create a bit more turbulence than glass hulls. My opinion only. Hope this helps. There are plenty of YouTube videos that help, but they don’t usually reference the adjustable mount.

Haha. I had forgotten about that ankle tap from Papalii. Unbelievable from the big unit. Should be a good game tomorrow night.

I don’t think they are that bad yet, but it will be a tight field for the spoon this year unless a few teams discover some form. Having said that, the Panthers are red hot. They look like a team that loves playing together and they have a real spark, while some teams look like they are just going through the motions. Team dynamics is an interesting thing.
  24. Don’t know what everyone is complaining about. Monday lunchtime looks pretty good as long as you don’t get seasick! Just might need to be very quick.
