  1. Hmmm. Prawns, hey? Might be time to get the prawn net out in the back yard for a few practice throws ready for when the school holidays are over. Bad luck on the donut, @Andrew P. We all have them.
  2. Try the schoolie tonight. If you don’t like it I will be over tomorrow to swap it for a bag of pillies. Easy way to cook it is to fry off some onions, garlic and ginger, add a can of tomatoes and some extra water. Cook the sauce down until it thickens a bit and the add chunks of fish. The fish will cook in about 10 to 15 minutes. Add any herbs you have around (basil is good) or serve it as is. Pretty simple and tasty. I have only ever tried bonito smoked so you can keep that.
  3. My pleasure @Cavvy. He is a credit to you and Mrs Cavvy. Excellent manners and asks good, intelligent questions. He just needs to learn that the deckie should never outfish the skipper.
  4. Why not ring your local Quintrex dealer and ask them if they know if it can happen. I am sure someone will have tried it and they might know how it went.
  5. Thanks for doing the report Hamish. I only wish I had taken a video of your face when you caught that snapper. I have never seen someone so excited to catch a fish.
  6. So think you are going to need a longer measuring stick, Brian. . Nice work on the cod and grassie, mate. Perseverance and time on the water has paid dividends. Did you think about chucking a slug at the bait boil?
  7. This is from the app:
  8. The BlueChart G3 comes free with the unit. Paying for the premium version isn’t going to get you much more in the way of useful functionality. Why not try the pre-loaded maps for a while and then upgrade to the premium version if you think you could use any more features? The modern units have way more tech tricks than most of us will ever use.
  9. The Garmin comes with the ActiveCaptain app, which connects your smartphone or tablet to the head unit for software and chart updates, so your other option would be to use a tablet for navigation and leave your Garmin unit for sonar/sidescan and downview. That would give 2 screens of at least 9 incheswith no additional cost. By the way, You shouldn’t need to buy any extra maps. The pre-loaded maps are pretty detailed and you can update them for free using the app.
  10. Those Russian girls are going to really disappointed that they have been pushed off top billing, Greg
  11. He was probably screaming at you because you should be on the mower considering all the running around he does for you!
  12. I think the transducer for livescope is nearly $2k on its own.
  13. You might want to talk to a real expert first, Greg.
  14. Hi Greg. I think upgrading to a 9” screen is a great idea for you. Especially since I know you like to split screen when you are travelling and show both the map and the sonar. I have the Garmin 95sv and I find it really easy to use and the screen is fantastic, even with wet hands. I am definitely no tech head or gps expert, but I had a quick look at the specifications for the 952xs and they seem the same as the 95sv other than some unspecified navigation advantage and more advanced networking capability. Do you intend to network it to other devices? If not, it might be worth saving $1k or so and going for the 95sv. With the transducer, if you are fishing mostly in the Bay, you won’t need a top flight transducer that is capable at great depths if you are never fishing deeper than 40 metres. Maybe drop into Whitworths or some other marine electronics dealer and see what they say. No point buying more capability than you will ever use. Good luck.
  15. Just the 31. Tough day at the office, Ray.
  16. What a relief! I was having second thoughts about mowing the grass today
  17. I always do my own servicing. It is super easy. The major manufacturers have instructions and a checklist which you you sign and date. I keep a copy of the checklist and the receipt for any parts in the tinny. Water police have always been fine. They have just asked when you did the last service. Once one officer asked to see the date written on the jacket. Then again, I have always had a couple of the old block ones onboard so was compliant anyway, but I will have to get rid of these now. I have always found the water police to be courteous and easy to deal with, and I am glad they are out there because there are plenty of idiots out there as well. Thanks for the heads up, @rayke1938
  18. I remember a few of them launching themselves out of the water straight into the windscreen of my father-in-law’s Haines way back in the eighties in Hervey Bay late in the afternoon. Apparently they get attracted to the sunlight glinting off the screen. Nasty looking teeth from memory.
  19. Go as heavy as you like. These things were designed for skulldragging big fish up from the bottom so no point going too light.
  20. Nice report Hamish. You will be nagging @Cavvy to try for a permit next time they are up for grabs. Fantastic effort from @rayke1938as usual to introduce even more people to fishing NPD. When are you going under the knife, Ray?
  21. The Alvey Snapper reels were usually teamed up with a short, stout fibreglass rod and used offshore for dropping paternoster rigs for snapper and reef fish. There are also snapper winches which are similar but bigger and attach to the gunwhale of boats for offshore work. Strong and durable with a fast retrieve, but not a sportsfishing reel.
  22. Mullet are really hard for me as well. That one is not a diamond though - I can pick them. If I am casting for bait, I only keep the goldspot mullet because they are easy to identify and have no size limit.
  23. I think @Drop Beartook a photo which might show what the logo was? I didn’t take a lot of notice at the time but it may have been an anchor logo?
  24. A crane arrived to pick it up when we were launching. It is a govt vessel so someone will have some paperwork to do.
  25. Good to see you posting again @Do$tylz. You and @rayke1938probably put up the best photos on the site.
