  1. That is a bit of coin heading for Atlantis, @Sneaky1. I would be crying for a week, but you have turned adversity into an opportunity. Nice work.
  2. Just finished eating some of the slatey. Dusted fillets with paprika, a bit of salt, cracked pepper and cooked in lemon butter and it was delicious. I will have more time tomorrow so will add a mango salsa.Cod on the menu Friday night and the macky is cryovacced in the freezer ready for curries and fish soup. Not red emperor or tuskies but good enough for me.
  3. Sorry for your loss @Shannon collins. As you can see, your uncle was well liked and respected by many people on this site.
  4. Top day out @ellicat. I still can’t believe that we managed to boat your mackerel despite having pretty much every rod caught up in the debacle. I was really happy with my new rod and can’t wait to test it out again soon. Fish are now filleted and packed, I am showered and beered so off for a nap before I pull on the maroon jersey ready to inflict humiliation on the Blues tonight.
  5. May be that much if you spool the whole thing with braid. Ask about a top spooling of 150 metres of braid on top of mono backing. I have never paid that much. The jigging thing is a bit of an unknown to me. Pretty sure you could use that braid for other fishing but thought you might save some cash with another choice.
  6. You will get lots of opinions on this question, Kat. I have been using Daiwa J Braid X8 lately and I quite like it, but I also had no problem with Power Pro and other brands. Avoid the really cheap stuff. Get a nice bright colour. I have been using blue Daiwa and it looks nice on the reel but so hard to see against the water. I would recommend going to your local tackle shop and talking with them. Take your reel and they will spool it up properly for you. Most do this for free if you buy the braid there. If it is not done it might slip on the spool or give you wind knots. 20lb is fine for macs or sharks if you use the right leader. The other thing you should think about is only buying 150 metres of braid and the shop will use mono for backing and to fill the spool. They don’t usually charge for the backing either, so bonus metres there. Half the price and not too many fish you will catch in an estuary will run 100 metres. These are just my opinions and I am sure you will get more advice from others with more expertise than me. Good luck.
  7. Are you planning to go jigging @Kat? If so, that might be a good brand and price. If not, you could get a good braid much cheaper that would be fine for other fishing.
  8. I doubt they are connected Kelvin. I think Wayne has his hands full churning out the Gobblers.

They should have started at 12 noon to have any chance
  10. I was allowed to bring back as many as we were going to eat and I was allowed to cook them whole, just gutted, in a buttery pan over a small fire on the beach then use a fork to scrape the flesh off the bones. They were delicious. This is what really got me into fishing - catching tons of butter bream off a jetty with a handline then cooking them up as a kid. Happy days! Sorry about the thread hijack @Sneaky1
  11. When I was a little kid I used to spend most of the. School holidays with relies who were early settlers at Amity Point. My great uncle used to make me up a dough to catch butter bream off the old jetty. It consisted of flour, water, cotton wool, cheese and a dash of kero. It certainly worked so maybe there is something in it?
  12. I looks like a pretty spot Mark, and sounds like a nice relaxing break.

    Never in doubt......
  14. Yep, butt on the floor, bend in the middle, rolled it round and the spine and the guides lined up perfectly. No twist when the salesman was hanging onto the tip so I think it is a keeper. Just need to test it out on a real fish to make sure.
  15. So I settled on a Samaki Zing Extreme v2 10 - 20lb 701 SH. Checked to make sure all eyelets were facing the right way and went over the rod carefully. Feels great in the hand, just like the 2 - 6lb Samaki that is my favourite soft plastic rod. Can’t wait to give it a run soon.
  16. Thanks @Sneaky1. I would love a venom but can’t really justify the price. So many choices nowadays. Thanks for the offer but I will be right. Safe driving mate.
  17. That’s quite possible @GregOug. I will drop into my favourite tackle store and see what the go is. I know the venom range is made here but it is more expensive. The Wilson website says live fibres are designed in Australia but isn’t specific about where they are built. I am not hung up on buying Australian made, more interested in quality at a reasonable price. Thanks for the input. I will get some advice from the guys at the shop and go from there.
  18. @Sneaky1. Just wondering if one of the live fibres in your arsenal is the 6 to 8kg snapper rod (spin)? I am thinking of grabbing one this week to use for bigger snapper and the occasional toss at tuna if I can ever get them close enough. I haven’t had one in my hands yet but I have a live fibre 8kg 6 foot baitcast barra rod that is beautiful to use so I am assuming the whole range is same quality.
  19. What a mean dad you are @Cavvy. That poor boy hardly ever gets a chance to fish.
  20. Good tip @ED. I think I might be going in search of yet another rod that I want but don’t really need next week, so I will remember to check the spine.
  21. Nice video @Fishaman. That dust, especially that red dust gets into everything. The trips I have been on, we always put heaps of cling wrap around the inlets and outlets of the outboard and secured it with gaffer tape. We were convinced we were doing the right thing, but who knows. Did you end up fishing any of the rivers there, or just offshore?
  22. I walked through that park a few days ago and didn’t see anything happening? Oh, well. Orleigh Park at West End has plenty of room but does get busy. Fishing options there too for the tragics (Hamish I am looking at you).
  23. You sure know how to make a fish look pretty, @ellicat . Donut avoided and a nice dinner on the way. Congrats.
  24. @Junky, I have a couple of pairs of these and they are great for cutting most things. I find them a bit bulky for getting the braid tag ends cut close enough to the knot. I have a pair of Daiwa braid snips that are getting a bit old now but do a good job.
