  1. I am really happy with my Garmin. It has a great screen and is easy to use. Still trying (but not too hard) to get the most out of the side screen function. I hav3 never owned a Lowrance so can’t really compare the two, but I have noticed on other people’s boats that the Lowrance touch screen seems to really hate wet fingers, which is less of a problem on the Garmin. From my research, they are both good brands so maybe look to see who has the best price when you are ready to buy. You may have just been unlucky with your unit.

Anyone else watch the Titans put the Sea Eagles to the sword? Looking forward to watching them next year. The Foxtel coverage was a bit annoying. You would have thought that Tom Trbojevic was the only player at the ground. Turbo Tom becomes Tragic Tom and that is all we hear about after the game. Nothing against the guy but they didn’t do a single interview with a Titan player or even comment on their performance. Poor effort that.
  3. I think I would need to be blindfolded in 30ft seas. The only knots I would be tiding would be in my intestines. @Junky, are you talking about the fg or Alberto?
  4. Get the biggest and best you can afford, even if it means saving a bit longer or borrowing a bit more. We don’t get that many 10 knots or under days and even 10 knots can make those trips to the close islands wet and uncomfortable in a small tinny. Not sure of your boating experience. If you have lots of experience and are confident in your and the boat’s ability you will be safe, but maybe a bit wet. If you are not experienced and you are coming back when the NE seabreeze has kicked in, you might find it a bit hairy. My tinny is 4.35m and has nice high sides, but the days I can comfortably get out to Mud or Green are limited. Like Brian, though, I am old and conservative. Good luck with your search.
  5. Haha. That thing is a beast and has caught fish (well, a fish anyway). @Esox_angler, I don’t know if you ever visit this forum anymore but it was the best gift ever. I still pick it up and fall just a little bit in love with it. If I go offshore again sometime soon, I will take it out and see how it goes on a marauding spanish.
  6. I had to google a couple of these knots. Had never heard of the PR knot - looks a bit fancy for me. Have tried the fg a few times and failed but might have another crack now I am not working and have a bit of spare time. Then I discovered that all these years I thought I was using the improved Albright, but turns out it is the Alberto, so there you go. Couldn’t find the triple finish Alberto but again, that might be a bit beyond my capabilities. Funny how we always want a good knot at the business end, but then hope it is the one that fails when we get a snag so we don’t have to ties a braid to fluro knot in a 10 knot breeze.
  7. Thems fightin’ words! . Next time I go there I will take my 8’ Wilson Heritage rod. It is a latter day copy of those old soft fibreglass rods that I bought years ago and never use. I did take it down to Jacobs Well once with @benno573 and @ellicat. Benno laughed when he saw it so it went straight back to the rod rack and stayed there ever since. He is a cruel, cruel man.

Even though I am long time Broncos supporter, I reckon the spoon is what they deserve this season. The Dogs have given their all in most games and the for and against difference tells the tale. Mad Monday can’t come soon enough for Brisbane this year.
  9. Put Put a few lazy hours in at the port for a couple of small bites and no fish. I saw your message about the lease when I got home, which was too late. Sure was a busy day at the ramp for a Thursday. Octopus hey? Yum!
  10. What a great snapper. I also enjoyed the little Jamie Oliver vid at the end, Ted.
  11. No pots this time Kelvin, but we did take note of where the pro pots were for next time.
  12. The returns process for eBay is really easy. Mrs Scaley ordered a cover for her eReader. When it arrived, it was the wrong size and was not the size advertised. All she had to do was print off a label provided by eBay, drop it off at the Post Office and she got a full refund from the vendor within 3 days. It was only a handful of dollars but she was pi$$ed off on principle.
  13. She is always happy when I come home for a feed. Luckily for me @tugger has a freezer full of quality reef fish from recent trips so left me with the catch of tasty bread and butters yesterday. Weather looks good tomorrow. Might have to have another go somewhere.
  14. When @tugger and I were offshore a couple of weeks ago, we were talking about hitting the Logan River to hunt down some elbow slapping whiting. Yesterday the tides and Mark’s shifts lined up so we decided to have a crack. I have only fished the Logan once before, and Mark hadn’t been there for years but did have some recent marks from his son. Mark organised some bloodworms and I provided the tinny and a yabbie pump. We met up at the private boat ramp at Carbrook. It is a really nice facility and the guy running it is very helpful. He gave us a few clues about where we might find a few whiting, then off we went. As we were loading Mark’s gear into the boat he was telling me how he was was going to brain the whiting with his Black Queen and his Black Knight. What’s this? You have to beat the fish in the Logan at chess to take home a feed? Of, course, he was just referring to his secret weapons, the vintage whiting rods that have served him and many others for decades. They are soft slow taper rods about 8ft long matched with small spinning reels with light nylon line, a long trace and a longshank hook. We fished the last of the outgoing tide with not a lot of action. When the yabbie banks became exposed we easily pumped enough to keep us going through the afternoon. The action would not be described as frenetic, but we did assemble a feed. We kept a feed of 5 whiting in the 30 to 33cm range and 4 bream about the same size. There were lots of smaller bream and a few smaller whiting, but we were hunting the elbow slappers. So we may not have completely achieved our goal, but we did work out a few spots and techniques to try next time. Overall it was a great day and I will definitely be trying that area again soon. Thanks for the company, Mark. We will do it again soon. Here is my usual dead fish photo for your viewing pleasure:
  15. I love that the brand is YOLO. Is that an acronym for You Only Lie Once? Good on you @GregOugfor taking it on the chin. On the other hand, the more they get away with it the more they get away with it.
  16. Nice work @Daryl McPhee and co. @tugger and I went searching for elbow slappers in the Logan today. Thought we had an upgrade for the whiting leaderboard until I read this. Good to see they are around because I love crumbed whiting.
  17. Get in line, buddy! We have had the same numbers in the Saturday lotto since it started and that was a long time ago. But, when I win I will shout you an electric. You probably need the auto deploy Terrova model so you won’t even need to put your durrie down to get it happening. On a positive note, good to see you got out again. Shame about the result but a nice day anyway. We should work harder to figure out Harries in the next few months.
  18. Some nice whiting there @Daryl McPhee. Around 30cm?
  19. That is annoying, but you could almost forgive them on the basis that they may have thought you were just motoring not trolling. Whereas the clowns who have a whole ocean to pass you when you are anchored or drifting, and still roar past you at full noise within spitting distance really frustrate me. Also the idiots who approach the boat ramp too fast when you are trying to retrieve your boat, setting up an awkward wake. That one seems to be particularly popular with jet skis.
  20. Seem to recall a similar incident with the same miscreant when approaching a yabbie bank. Phone, keys, wallet and smokes in the pockets. Guess which item he was most worried about?
  21. Not that I noticed Wazza. I was in 15 meters of water and didn’t see any debris or anything in the water. I called into the dealer on the way home but they didn’t have a replacement pin so I will be looking around tomorrow. The dealer did say that the pins are stainless steel but not marine grade so they do fail sometimes. When I pulled the prop off at home I can see that the pin has broken on both sides of the shaft and the bit in the shaft is not coming out easily so that is another job for tomorrow.
