  1. Would have liked to have come up and have a look before Tuesday but that is not possible in the current lockdown. Brian (Ellicat) and I are planning to drive up the coast on Tuesday and look at gear a guy has up there. He has heaps of second hands reels, rods and everything else. Hoping to find the rods and reels I need up there. If you aren’t doing anything your welcome to come along. Also, I want this outfit purely for trolling. My boat has a large space meant for skis but I can fit quite a lot of rods in there. Although, I like to have them rigged up ready to go so too many and they start catching on each other. Hence the rationalisation of my outfits.
  2. So a 20kg Ugly Stik overhead rod and a Penn Fathom reel for trolling. Is that right?
  3. Thanks for that. I’ll look at those reels. I already have the TLD10. Was just saying it’s probably too small. I could use it for one of my bottom bashing/reef rigs though?
  4. Thanks ED. That sounds like a good idea. You cast with the mono running through but the braid underneath gives you more line on the reel. I will try that. What knot do you use to join the two?
  5. Thanks @benno573. When you say a small overhead, what size do you mean? I have a TLD10 but was thinking that is too small.
  6. Is braid fine for baitcasters or does it tangle too easily?
  7. Thanks guys. I’ll try to digest all your advice and let you know how I go.
  8. That’s a helpful resource Hans. Just a pity it is only for freshwater fishing, but still useful.
  9. Hi all, Needing to find something to do without wearing a mask today, I start reviewing and rationalising my current rod and reel collection. I am trying to get two combos for each of the following: 1. Whiting/other small irrelevants 2. Grassies/snapper shallow water 3. Reefies (Moreton Bay size) 4. Trolling for Pelagics (Moreton Bay) 5. Pelagics (sight casting - mackerel, tuna etc.) 6. Jigging for bait I have 1, 2, 3 and 6 covered. Just need a decent lever overhead (suggestions welcomed) for number 4, which leaves no. 5. Looking for recommendations for length, style, type of rods and reels to suit sight casting for Moreton Bay pelagics. I should mention I already have two good baitcaster reels and two small to medium size overheads which can be cast as well. They are a Shimano Bantam 50, a Shimano Chromica 100B, an Abu Garcia 6600BCX and a Shakespeare SKP 6000. If I were to use these I would obviously need a couple of good baitcaster rods to suit. Or if everyone thinks spinning reels are better, what size etc. and which rods would suit. Would appreciate any suggestions, or if it’s all too hard and makes your brain hurt, just disregard this post. cheers Greg
  10. Just as an adjunct to my previous post from Maritime Safety Queensland above, just saw this statement from this week’s Bush and Beach Fishing email: Today's announcement by the Queensland Government of a three-day lock down from 6pm Friday to 6pm Monday will rule out fishing this weekend. This was possibly going to be the case anyway with the current weather forecast, so what better time to get stuck into some trailer maintenance and tackle sorting. cheers Greg
  11. I don’t think NSW has anything to laugh about!
  12. This is an excerpt from the latest Maritime Safety Queensland release: Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Redlands and Logan From 6pm tonight, Friday 8 January, until 6pm Monday 11 January people in the local government areas of Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Redlands and Logan will be required to stay at home except for the following reasons: Shopping for essentials, food and necessary supplies Medical or healthcare needs, including compassionate requirements Exercise with no more than one other person, unless all from the same household Providing care or assistance to an immediate family member Work, or volunteering, or study if it is not reasonably practicable to work or learn remotely Child custody arrangements Legal obligations Visit for end of life Attend funeral or wedding in line with restrictions Masks will also need to be worn everywhere in those local government areas except if people are at home. Please refer to the Queensland Health website for a map of the lockdown area and specific Questions and Answers about this lockdown. https://www.qld.gov.au/health/conditions/health-alerts/coronavirus-covid-19/current-status/greater-brisbane-lockdown I note that the wording seems to have changed somewhat since the original lockdown back in March last year. I interpret the above to mean boating and fishing are Not Allowed during this current lockdown. I am not a lawyer however so I am not giving advice. You need to make your own minds up. cheers Greg
  13. Hi KM, I did try both the Thunnus 4000 and the 6000 on the rod before I bought one, as you suggested. I also took into consideration that I’m an old school mono user through and through. The 4000 takes around 180m of 5kg mono and the 6000 takes around 250m of 6kg mono. The rod is rated 4-6kg and I have put 6kg on the 6000. I started fishing many years ago and in those days I would have only used 6kg for whiting. For everything else you used 30lb or more. So to me 6kg is still like using cotton but I am slowly adapting. I am not a small bloke and have big hands and the 4000 felt like a toy to me. I am happier with the 6000. It is still not a big reel and, in my opinion, suits the rod well. Thanks for your comments though. Much appreciated. cheers Greg
  14. As a follow up to this, I have now bought a live fibre 7’ 4-6kg and have put a Thunnus 6000 on it. I intend trying both the 10’ 6” and 7’ ones on the grassies the next time I go out, so I let you know how I go. The way the weather is at the moment that will probably be sometime in 2022.
  15. It’s so dry I’m thinking of giving my rain gauge to charity.
  16. Might have to buy some cattle or sheep to keep it down for you. Geese are also surprisingly good at keeping grass down.
  17. I was going to suggest just holding the transducer in the water to see if it’s works first but you’ve already tried that. Is there any way of mounting it so it sits in the water in about the same position as when it worked just holding it? I would think you would be best trying to secure the transducer bracket to the kayak, rather than the transducer itself. That way you have a way of adjusting it.
  18. What about a Wilson Live Fibre? I bought a 10’ 6” one for around $220. The identifiers on it are RLF 42/2 10’ 6 spin, cast 25g, sinker 1-40g, braid 8-15 lb. It is a two piece and would be fantastic for bream and flathead.
  19. What rain? It’s as dry as down here on the Brisbane Northside!
  20. I have confidence in you Dino.
  21. Hey Ray, what is that last fish? Is that a black bream? Surely it is not related to saltwater bream so does it have another name? It looks like it would be good eating. Have you tried them?
  22. Hi @Ryannnnnnnn. Do you store your trailer under cover or outside? Found the following item about white rust and it appears to be saying galvanising needs time to develop protective oxides, which can be interfered with by pure water such as rain. https://www.azom.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=1220
  23. Well, that has me worried then. Mine’s a Dunbier as well. Although it has none of those concerns yet. I’d be taking it back for more than just the weld. That’s ridiculous. If mine goes like that I’ll be demanding my money back and going elsewhere!
